No one wants to feel under the weather from summer allergies especially when it’s beautiful outside. Unfortunately, airborne allergens don’t can’t care about what we want and in the summer months, they run rampant on our immune systems anyway. To help everyone susceptible to seasonal allergies get through this hot bed of sniffling and sneezing, we’ve provided the following twelve tips to avoid summer allergies.

12 TIPS TO AVOID SUMMER ALLERGIES

KEEP YOUR WINDOWS CLOSED

If you’re trying to avoid outdoor summer allergens like pollen or dust mites, keep your car and home windows closed at all times. Otherwise, you’ll not only be susceptible to symptoms, you’ll track allergen spores inside your home and spread them further into your routine.

WASH YOUR HAIR MORE FREQUENTLY

There’s a good chance you haven’t been keeping your windows closed, as we just mentioned. If that is the case, make sure to wash your hair more frequently, to ensure you’re not unwillingly collecting pollen spores and then tracking them throughout your home.

AVOID INSECTS

Over two million people are allergic to bug bites. Avoid harmful allergic reactions by staying indoors or using bug spray, when headed outside. Also, wear longer clothes, like pants and not shorts.

KEEP HOME TEMPERATURES LOW

Dust mites love warm, humid environments. To avoid infestation from these microscopic allergen hosts, keep your home thermostat around the low 60s and the lower humidity levels will prevent them from growing in the first place.

FIX ANY LEAKS

Humidity causes mold, so make sure to plug any leaks in your home, before perspiration starts to accumulate and turn into the pesky, wall-clinging allergen.

NO PETS IN BED

No matter how much you want your pet to sleep with you in bed at night, keep in mind they’re only inflating your chances of allergy attacks, by bringing pollen or dust particles into your bed sheets and rubbing them all over the places you put your face. To prevent this, simply keep them out of your bedroom. Also, getting cats and dogs groomed is important too, because shorter hair will prevent particles from accumulating in their coat.

STAY DUST FREE

Dust accumulates all year round, but is especially prominent in the summer months, because of open windows and pets/animals tracking dust indoors. To prevent associated dust mites from overtaking your home and stirring up your summer allergies, make sure to vigorously clean in the summer months, never letting dust settle or accumulate.

FREQUENTLY CLEAN BED SHEETS

Whether your pet is tracking allergens into your bed or you’re doing it yourself, bed sheets can be magnets for allergens, especially when they’re more prominent in the summer. That said, frequently washing them is a must. Boiling water is recommend, to properly kill all the allergens.

AVOID HIGHLY-POLLINATED AREAS

This is easier said than done, especially in the summer season. But, no matter how long you’ve been cooped up indoors, steer clear of areas with immense pollination, such as fields, parks and even large lawns.

WEAR A MASK

Wearing a mask that is typically seen in hospitals might seem like stretch, just to take preventative measures against summer allergies. Yet, no matter how they look, these inexpensive protectors can be an easy way to prevent inhalation of airborne allergens when doing regular outdoor activities, like walking the dog or cutting the lawn.

ALLERGY MEDICINE

For certain people with severe summer allergies, over-the-counter antihistamine options and sprays can be very helpful in preventing allergy outbreaks. However, before trying any allergy medicine, make sure to consult your physician first.
